I searched for “the BoyFriend log” on my iPad but couldn’t find it, how can I download it on iPad?

Go to the App Store on your iPad. Enter Boyfriend Log in the Search box. Click the dropdown arrow next to iPad Only in the Search menu. Switch to iPhone only. This action should display the iPhone version of the Boyfriend Log. Now you can download the Boyfriend Log to your iPad and start keeping track of your relationships!

What do the colors on the mood/color wheel mean?

The colors are subjective, but here’s their general meaning:

  • Green: Amazing, Blissful, Romantic
  • Orange: Happy, Warm, Fun
  • Yellow: Okay, Flat, Fine
  • Blue: Sad, Heavy, Teary
  • Red: Awful, Angry, Scary

How you view the colors depends on your relationship. Blue, for you, might be not talking to your boyfriend every day. For someone else, blue might mean spending hours in tears because of constant put-downs. Red could mean a disagreement, a more serious argument, or something far worse.

Note: If you’re in an abusive relationship, we urge you to seek professional help and not try to tackle your situation alone. See The Boyfriend Log Resource page at www.TheBoyfriendLog.com for more info, or go to THE NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOTLINE at: www.TheHotLine.org or call them at 1-800-799-7233. How do I pick a mood/color for my day?

The first time you open the app each day you’ll see the How Was Your Relationship Today screen? Use the wheel to choose your mood/color. That’s it! Whatever mood/color is displayed at the top of the wheel is the mood/color that will be recorded.

How do I change a mood/color for a day, once I’ve already selected one?

From the calendar, tap the day associated with the mood/color you want to change. Use the wheel to choose the mood/color for that day. Done!

How do I pick a secondary mood/color for a day?

From the How Was Your Relationship Today? screen, tap the plus sign in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. This action displays a secondary mood/color wheel. Tap on the secondary mood/color for that day (the plus sign changes to the mood/color you selected on the How Was Your Relationship Today? Screen). To change the secondary mood/color, tap on the secondary mood/color displayed at the bottom left-hand corner of the How Was your Relationship Today? screen. Congrats! You’ve added a secondary color!

How do I add a journal entry for a specific day?

From the How Was Your Relationship Today? screen tap the circle with the pencil at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This action displays the journal screen. From the Calendar, either tap on the day you’d like to add a journal for, or tap the entry on the timeline associate with the day you wish to journal. Both actions return you to the How Was Your Relationship Today? screen. Once there, tap the circle with the pencil at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This action displays the journal screen. Write your heart!

What’s the Calendar screen?

The Calendar screen is divided into two parts – calendar and timeline. Calendar allows you see patterns associated with your relationship. Notice, for example: are there three blue days in a row after each weekend? Does your boyfriend, husband or partner emotionally or physically “check out” every Monday? Is there a lack of communication while he’s away that contributes to your Monday – Wednesday blues? Or, do you see a field of yellow across your month? Maybe you’re merely marking time until someone more exciting comes along? The timeline lets you scroll through the days and see the mood/color and the Title and the first line of the journal associated with that day. Are your words matching up to your mood? Or, are you over- or underestimating the mood and color of your days?

How do I add a new person to journal about?

Dating more than one person? Want to see how they stack up? The Boyfriend Log allows you to add as many journals as you need. Or—and we recommend this no matter how many people you’re dating (even if you’re not yet dating!)—you can add a journal for YOURSELF. Track your own moods and journal about your day to see your relationships with more depth. To add additional journals, tap the settings icon a the top left of the Calendar screen. This action opens the Settings screen. Tap on the Journal option. This action opens the Pick a Journal screen. Tap the plus symbol in the top right corner of this screen. This action opens the Who are Your Journaling About? screen. Enter a name in the blank. Tap Done. You now have two journals!

How do I switch between multiple journals?

On the Calendar screen, right next to the Settings icon, you will see a circle with the first two initials of the name associated with that journal. Click on the circle. You’ll see a list of your active journals. Tap on the name of the person whose journal you’d like to see. This action switches you to the selected journal. All the mood/color selections and journal entries for the selected journal are now displayed within the Calendar & Journal screens.

I have selected a mood/color for each day and I have a stack of journal entries. What do I do now?

Now it comes down to you. The Boyfriend Log is a tool, a beautiful, smartly-designed tool (if we do say so ourselves), that allows you to log the moods, colors, and thoughts associated with a given day. After a few weeks, you should begin to notice patterns in your relationship. After a month, the patterns will become even clearer. Now it’s time to ask yourself the reality-check questions. For example:

  1. I see a field of green and orange. Kevin is one of the nicest people I have ever dated. He brings me flowers. Takes me on dates. Holds my hands. Opens my door. But . . . there’s something missing. Kevin does all the right things, but when I look at the log I keep for myself, I see yellow and blue days. Maybe it isn’t him? Maybe it’s me? Perhaps it’s time to change my focus, speak with him about my feelings, or free him to find someone who appreciates him more.
  2. Life with James has consistently been going downhill since he became an associate in the firm. He promised after law school that we’d have more time together. I love him dearly, but I spend every night alone, in tears. I’m miserable and I don’t think things are going to change.
  3. Wow! After talking to Nick about the patterns I’ve been seeing in my log, things have been great. My yellow days have turned to orange and the orange days are decidedly greener. He’s more romantic now than he’s been since our first month together.

How do I access the Settings screen?

Tap on the settings icon (looks kind of like a wheel or flower) at the top left of the Calendar window.

How do I set up Reminders?

In the Settings screen. Tap Reminders, and from there you can TURN Reminders off and on. CHANGE the time of your reminder. SET the reminder frequency. And, CREATE a custom Reminder message to remind you to update your calendar and journal entry daily. You can make up any text for your reminder—from “Remember to log your day today,” to “Call Mom” (no one will be the wiser on this one), to “9:00 pm” or your favorite affirmation. Whatever works for you and makes you feel safe and well cared for.

How do I turn sounds off and on?

In the Settings screen.

How do I change my Pin number or email?

Again, in the Settings Screen. Easy breezy.

Where can I find the tutorial?

The tutorial is available whenever you need it on the Settings screen.

Can I re-watch the video trailer?

Absolutely! We loved making it and hope you love watching it. The video trailer can be re-watched anytime, also from the Settings screen.

How do I delete a journal/log?

When a relationship ends, we don’t need painful reminders. You can delete a journal/log by tapping the Settings icon on the Calendar screen. Once on the Settings screen, tap on the Journal line. This action opens the Pick Journal screen. To delete an active journal, swipe to the left on the line of the journal you want to delete. This action opens the Delete options. Tapping on the word delete opens a confirmation message, asking you to confirm you want to delete the selected journal. Tapping on confirm, deletes the journal.

Note: All the information associated with a journal will be deleted. Please be sure you want to delete all the journal entries and mood selections for a particular journal before proceeding. If you want to keep a journal, for future reference, but not be reminded of the name every time you open the Boyfriend Log app, you can change the journal name by clicking on the arrow to the far right of the name.

How do I delete a journal entry?

To delete a journal entry,  navigate to the main screen then locate the entry you want to delete in the list shown in the lower part of the screen. Once you’ve found the entry you want to delete, swipe from right to left over the entry. You should now see a red delete button in that cell that you can tap on to remove the entry.

How do I turn off reminders?

Reminders are accessed through the Settings screen. On the Settings screen, tap Reminders. This action opens the Reminders screen. From here, you can TURN Reminders off and on.

How do I sync + backup with the cloud?

Your journals and settings are stored safely and securely in the Dropbox cloud data store and are kept constantly in sync while you are connected to the internet. This allows you to share journals across devices and ensures your data is always backed up to the cloud. Your data remains in your personal dropbox account and at no time do we or any other third party have access to the data.

In Dropbox you’ll see a folder called Boyfriend Log under Dropbox > Apps > Boyfriend Log. Inside this folder you’ll see a text file called **README.txt**.  Please do not delete this folder! Deleting this folder means your journals will no longer be synced or backed up to Dropbox. This folder has been intentionally left blank as a reminder from Dropbox that you have authorized the Boyfriend Log app to store data in your Dropbox.

Help! I’ve lost my journal and need to restore from Dropbox.

From time to time we’ve had users who’ve lost their journal or journal entries and need to restore them from a backup. Assuming you’ve been using Dropbox to sync and backup your journals, we can help you to safely restore your lost data.

Step 1: Stop using the app.
When we perform the restore it will erase any entries made after the moment we are restoring to.

Step 2: Check for an update.
We are constantly finding and fixing issues with the software and posting updates to ensure the app continues to work with newer versions of the iPhone, iOS and Dropbox. Before going any farther, please ensure you’ve updated to the most recent version of the Boyfriend Log.

Step 3: Email us.
Performing a restore is a delicate procedure and we want to make sure that it is done safely and smoothly. If you reach out to us via email or via the support messaging system within the app we can arrange to work directly with you to facilitate the restore. Our support email is support@theboyfriendlog.net.
